Facebook Invitation

Goleb, Burg. De Vlugtlaan 125

Doors: 19h30

Free Entrance

(Performance begins at 20h00)

AULA INTERGALACTICA is a research based collaboration that first began in 2009 between the artists Yota Ioannidou and Teresa María Díaz Nerio. The project’s first materialization appeared at the 3rd Athens Biennial as an archive and three performative lectures on three different historical events; the protests by indigenous peoples in the Peruvian Amazon (the Bagua massacre of 2009) the 9 hours movement of Canada and the UK in the 19th century (one of the predecesors of the 8 hours movement), and the life of Maria Pantazi an early greek anarchist and former prostitute who was arrested and executed in Paris in 1871 (after the “defeat” of La Commune).

The performative lecture at Goleb will present the three stories together, contextualized in relation to one another and to their own historical “environments”. These events will be narrated by two voices, the dead woman and nobody.

AULA INTERGACTICA was first presented at the Athens Biennial 2011 curated by Kernel as part of the project Word of Mouth, Diplareios School, 22nd October – 11th December 2011.

Yota Ioannidou was born in 1976 in Athens. She graduated with a BA from the Athens School of Fine Arts and a MFA from the Dutch Art Institute, The Netherlands. Her work combines visual documentation, discussions and interviews that act to question and cross-examine phenomena triggered and maintained by various hierarchical structures for political, cultural or social reasons. Recent projects include “On the hill one happens to be sitting on”- A tribute to failure (2011) in Other possible worlds – Dictionary in Space, Art workshop/Casino Luxembourg Forum d’art contemporain, “Restage Radio A” an ongoing project for the Archive-Public (2010), and the publication STRATAGEM (2009), detailing with the effects of factory relocation, de-industrialization and the consequences of contemporary economic processes. Yota Ioannidou is currently the artist in residence at Goleb.

http://www.yotaioannidou.net/

Teresa María Díaz Nerio was born in the Dominican Republic and is a researcher as well as a visual and performance artist currently living in Amsterdam. She graduated in Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2007 and received her Master’s from the Dutch Art Institute in 2009. Her research often focuses on subjects informed by the history of colonial and neocolonial invasions in the Global South, challenging the Eurocentric and US centric notions of who is who and what is what. Recent projects include the transdisciplinary roundtable and screening “BE.Bop 2012 Black Europe Body Politics” curated by Alanna Lockward at the Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, Berlin. Her collaboration with Stefanie Seibold was presented at “re.act feminism #2- a performing archive”, Centro Cultural Montehermoso, Vitoria Gasteisz, Spain, curated by Beatrice Ellen Stammer and Bettina Knaup, where they performed “Travesti de Sangre” and presented the installation “Matt und Slaap wie Sneew” containing their collaborative work and Seibold’s research on Gina Pane.

Project Goleb & The Crisis in Culture 50th Anniversary

Maquis

By Jeremiah Day

“This war will drag on beyond any platonic armistice.” - Rene Char

Maquis, a slide-show performance, was made in 2004 to contribute to the dialogue around the European Constitution and the 2004 Dutch Presidency of the European Union. Originally presented at an Amsterdam squat to serve as the basis for a public discussion, the work draws heavily upon the work of Hannah Arendt.

Given the ongoing conflicts about the nature of the European project, and particular Geert Wilders’ assertion that the upcoming Dutch elections should be “about one thing: Europe,” this presentation serves not only to conclude the Arendt Crisis in Culture event, but to bring the theoretical discussions into contact with practical ones.

Goleb, Burg De Vlugtlaan 125

Performance: 20h00

More of a working session than a conference, this gathering will break open new lines of thought in the relatively under-researched terrain connecting Hannah Arendt’s work and contemporary cultural practice.

“The Crisis in Culture: Its Social and Its Political Significance” published in 1961, was Arendt’s contribution to the debates of her time concerning avant-garde and kitsch, high and low culture. The 2011 fiftieth anniversary served as an occasion to take up this text and elaborate upon it through a series of reading-sessions and talks held last year in London, Berlin and Amsterdam. This commemorative jubileum culminates in May with a gathering of participants and speakers from the previous sessions, presented by VU University Amsterdam and co-hosted with the artist’s initiative Goleb.

The central structure will be three reading sessions in which Arendt’s “Crisis in Culture” essay will be read aloud and opened up for discussion, with each morning introduced by key authorities in the field. Accompanying the reading sessions will be two roundtable discussions – first focusing on clarifying Arendt’s work on culture and the second bringing those insights to bear upon our own present day debates. Additionally, VU Research Masters students will present some of their ongoing work around the subject and the event will be launched with a reception and introductory presentation on Arendt by Jeremiah Day.

All events are open to the public, with no advance preparation required for participating in the reading sessions.

Wednesday May 16th: (Hosted by VU University Amsterdam)

17:30 – Tour #1 – The Former Van Heutsz Monument – Svea Juergenson – to avoid the common disconnection between symposium and their situ, and to share in the ongoing projects by VU Research Master’s students, two short walking tours will be offered parallel to the program. The first is a case study of art’s capacity to both reflect and obscure history. Meeting point: VU main entrance.

The Foreign Legion are a creative group made up of designers, architects, event managers, artists, musicians, and dancers (to name but a few), who offer their services for free, with the simple idea and desire to make the world “a better and more beautiful place.” Taking their name for the reason that “anyone can join”, and rather than seeing their approach as naïve, the group’s main aim is to free creativity from the restraints of commercial and economic factors by actively searching out creatives and would-be-clients who share the group’s core values.

“Our idea is for no property. It should be accessible and free for everybody. If you give an idea freely you will always enable it to develop. To realize this accessibility of information we make sure that every project is free to download with all necessary files to rebuild or sample.

Use it as it is or make it better.

The Foreign Legion are involved in all creative fields. We consist of designers, architects, event managers, artists, musicians, dancers and more. We want to help you with your idea but we also would like you to become a part of us. You can join by exchanging, ideas, materials or even contributing with your own workmanship. But you can also ask us for help.

Every project we do – we do it for free.

Need help? Call the Foreign Legion!

There is no project we won’t put all our skills, passion and time into.

Today can be better than yesterday and there is always a possibility for change. Yes we are dreamers and yes we believe that the world is great, but that just makes it worth fighting for.”

Brian Holmes is an art and cultural critic whose blog Continental Drift (the other side of neoliberal globalisation) acts as an archive for his texts and reflects a series of seminars Holmes carried out with various people throughout the world, including the notorious self-organized New York art space 16 Beaver Group. For this event Holmes will be discussing his new line of enquiry on the subject of Technopolitics, entitled Crisis Theory for Complex Societies. This project aims to map the multiple forces that come together to bring about societal change. (See below for a full abstract on the evening’s lecture).

Brian’s talk will be accompanied with a lecture by Buro Janssen & Jansen researcher, Rick van Amersfoort. Buro Janssen & Jansen are an organisation who utilize the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to critically investigate the police, justice, secret services and home affairs in Holland and the European Union. Van Amersfoort will be discussing a recent project that addresses the de-radicalization of the Counter Culture in Western Europe since the fall of the Berlin wall.

The evening will also serve as the Amsterdam book launch for The Relevation of the Concealed, Politics (in)forms: Freedom of Information Act Results (WOB/FOIA) by Renée Ridgway. With contributions by Freek Lomme, Simon Ferdinando and Rick van Amersfoort.

Information, books, discussions and drinks will be available at the bar.

Tickets: €4 (suggested)

Organized by Renée Ridgway + Taf Hassam

Supported by Goleb

Crisis Theory for Complex Societies
Technopolitics research project by Brian Holmes

How do societies change? We know that capitalism develops in forty-to-sixty year cycles, bookended by great crashes and periods of stagnation. Technologies and relations of production are transformed along with modes of government and social reproduction. New patterns of trade and international relations emerge on the geopolitical level. Ten or fifteen years later, people look back and realize: “That was a turning point. The world is different now.” Such a change has been experienced in living memory, with the turmoil of the late sixties/early seventies that ushered in neoliberalism. Why should we wait for fifteen years to find out what will emerge from the current crisis? By bringing together the work of the technological innovation school, the regulation approach and world-systems theory, this project aims to map out the interrelations between multiple fields of societal transformation. The aim is strategic: understanding sharpens the capacity for intervention. The presentation will offer a rapid overview of the theoretical framework and the work in progress.

Brian Holmes is a cultural critic, living in Chicago after 20 years in Paris. He holds a doctorate in Romance Languages and Literatures from the University of California at Berkeley, was the English editor of publications for Documenta X, was a member of the editorial collective of the French journal Multitudes from 2003 to 2008, and has published a collection of texts on art and social movements entitled Hieroglyphs of the Future: Art & Politics in a Networked Era (Zagreb: WHW, 2002); Unleashing the Collective Phantoms: Essays in Reverse Imagineering (New York: Autonomedia, 2007); and Escape The Overcode: Activist Art in the Control Society (Eindhoven and Zagreb: Vanabbemuseum/WHW, 2009). In 2009, Holmes was awarded the Vilém Flusser Prize for Theory at Transmediale in Berlin.

Rick van Amersfoort is a researcher at Buro Jansen & Janssen. Jansen & Janssen publishes a quarterly newsletter, books, magazines, reports and numerous websites that make visible Buro Jansen & Janssen’s research and engagement with the public: http://www.openbaarheid.nl, http://www.openheid.nl, http://justitievrijheidenveiligheid.nl, http://www.preventieffouilleren.nl, http://www.identificatieplicht.nl. Van Amersfoort has lectured at museums and institutions: Van Abbe Museum (2010), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2008), Casco Projects (2009), Fort Asperen (2011) and at universities and conferences in the Netherlands, Europe and abroad. For the past 10 years he has also worked as an experimental videographer, traveling through Africa, Asia and Latin America, conducting interviews with local people about their situations and concerns in relation to transnational companies.

Roel Griffioen (NL) is a journalist and architecture historian. He is an editor for both Kunstlicht, a Dutch journal for visual art, visual culture and architecture, and AWM, a leading Dutch architecture magazine. Frequently publishing as both a journalist and researcher Griffioen’s main topic of research is on transparency and the post-war city in the Netherlands.

Recent publications include: ‘Shaping the City of Tomorrow’, with Lisa Goudsmit, XOXO The Mag; ‘From Glass to One-Way Glass. Shifting Meanings of Transparency, Openness and Privacy in Architecture’, Open (2011) 22, pp. 130-143 (English edition); ‘Imaging Purity. The rhetoric of the photographic image in Le Corbusier’s Vers une Architecture’, Kunstlicht 32 (2011) 3, pp. 12-23; ‘Het glazen huis. Privacy en openbaarheid in de vroegnaoorlogse stad’, Kunstlicht 32 (2011) 1/2, pp. 64-75; ‘Fuck the System’, Kunstlicht 32 (2011) 4 (essay on the epistemological structures that man builds in order to understand the world).

A recent project of Griffioen’s has been the incidental newspaper ‘WEST’, covering events, critical reflections, and facts about the neighbourhood of Amsterdam-Nieuw-West. During his residency at Goleb and working alongside residents Taf Hassam and Kaja Wie van der Pas, Griffioen will begin developing a brief socio-political history of the neighbourhood. The project aims to develop A Goleb Guide book, tracing the original ideologies of transparency that were crystalized in the architecture and urban design of the neighbourhood in comparison to the transformation that Nieuw-West is currently undergoing; from the ‘open city’ to the ‘city of security.’ The guidebook will later be freely available for the future residents and guests of Goleb.

F.I.R.E.I.N.C.A.I.R.O. is a Live Radio/Event space inspired, in part, by the renowned Belfast independent record label, Good Vibrations. The project is a collaboration with the artist-run space Goleb, the UK community radio station Soundart Radio (102.5FM), and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie’s very own Radio Rietveld.

Art and music have long contributed to society and our way of life. But in these dire financial times where media has been swallowed by giant conglomerates, and culture has fallen under the scrutinizing eye of market capitalism; where is the unifying space that announces its difference to the prescribed status quo?

Throughout the history of popular culture this collective space, occurring both physically and conceptually, has been a hub of creativity, exploring new and old technologies and giving birth to new sounds and new vibrations.

In Belfast, caught between the conflicts of its time, it was a little known record shop and label called Good Vibrations. Achieving its fame for producing the first record ever to be played twice in a row on British airwaves, it was primarily a project that recognized the potential of music to be a unifying force.

A little over a year ago it appeared that the Internet, with its use of social media, could be the free space where this difference could be heard; the apparent spark that lit the fires of the provincial town of Sidi Bouzid, which later reverberated to the cities of Cairo, London and New York.

With the recent censorship laws being proposed on the Internet, our question as a group has been: If we could freely express ourselves, what kind of vibrations would we want to send out there? The workgroup responded with a song by The Cure, F.I.R.E.I.N.C.A.I.R.O. which after all is an intense love song.

Throughout the week, different radio programs will take place with a variety of guests and a range of live musical acts.

The entire project will be broadcasted as a Live Feed through the Radio Rietveld website, and will also appear on the UK community radio station Soundart Radio (102.5FM)

Follow the week’s events on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/FIREINCAIRO/374246752600653

We Are The Time:

Drawing inspiration from The Role of a Lifetime (2003), a work by artist and filmmaker Deimantas Narkevičius WE ARE THE TIME will explore the role of lifetime and life experience as a crucial source of ideas and inspirations, as a force that shapes ones’ art practice. Life experience is always generated as the intersection between the personal rhythm of one’s life and the larger societal perspective. How do we position ourselves in time? What are the decisive moments in our personal lives? What is our relation to the historical moment or context? How do we weave them into our life-narratives? The reflection on historical moments and situations together with one’s personal experience converge into a generative force that searches form in a work of art, an image, a gesture or informs one’s entire practice. The work of art becomes thinking history out loud.

From Tahrir Square to Occupy Wall Street – we are witnessing a desire for transition, but its direction is still open. This momentum belongs to the youngest generation of artists who will contribute to it with their work and shape it with the way they form fleeting communities. Can we imagine our lives and our work after twenty years?

With the advent of digital technologies and new regimes of representation, the rapid changes in our media-environment suggest very different ways of relating to the materiality of images and to their veracity. The network condition we live in, offers unprecedented possibilities to have simultaneous and multiple perspectives on events with social and historical significance. This implies a very different mode of historicizing, of writing down our memories. It is in this vortex of eventfulness we have to find ourselves again.

ANGELS IN AMERICA (NY, USA)

Angels in America is the duo of Moppy Pont and Merv Glisten, based in New York. Filthy electronics in the footsteps of Throbbing Gristle with a damaged pop side, almost always falling apart with lyrics spun from some poet head zone. Their first tape “Cunt Tree Grammar” was re-released through Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label.

CITY HANDS (Den Haag)

Born a punk and raised a rainbow watcher, Manuel Padding aka City Hands has been active as a music citizen and a renownd butterfly observer for a few decades now. As a free-minded follower of Gustav Metzger and a reader of early science-fiction free press, M.P. believes in the creative powers of destruction and in the secret forces lying in forgotten languages. His fluid compositions aim to create rich underground communities that would stand against corruption worldwide.
- Professeur X.G.B. Bongo

BRIAN D MCKENNA (Ottawa, Canada)

Through the use of analogue audio/video synthesis, McKenna’s performances create mind-melting synesthetic progressions of visceral, seemingly abstract sound and vision. His continually evolving setups of self-built and heavily customized gear employ constructive and destructive interference patterns to the task of exploring resonances within specific space and time across hybrid media.

http://www.mediumrecords.com

Also of interest

Some good friend’s of our’s also have an opening on this night, so we have changed the times of the events.

For those who would like to see both shows should now be able to see the happenings at the NIMK, while making it over to Goleb to catch the majority of the show! God speed!

Seamus Cater & Viljam Nybacka
The Anecdotes – LP release concert.A collection of ten anecdotal and biographical song portraits of art historical figures. Alexis Lapointe, Ewan MacColl, L.S. Lowry, Bas Jan Ader, Sergei Prokofiev and Eadweard Muybridge all find a place on the record. Recorded by Shahzad Ismaily (Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy) in New York in April 2011. Released in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies.
