ANGELS IN AMERICA (NY, USA)

Angels in America are Moppy Pont and Merv Glisten, both based in New York. The duo was discovered by Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth!). Their first tape “Cunt Tree Grammar” was re-released through Moore’s own label Ecstatic Peace. Weird, sultry, damaged and almost always falling apart with lyrics spun from some poet head zone.

CITY HANDS (Den Haag)

Born a punk and raised a rainbow watcher, Manuel Padding aka City Hands has been active as a music citizen and a renownd butterfly observer for a few decades now. As a free-minded follower of Gustav Metzger and a reader of early science-fiction free press, M.P. believes in the creative powers of destruction and in the secret forces lying in forgotten languages. His fluid compositions aim to create rich underground communities that would stand against corruption worldwide.

BRIAN D MCKENNA (Ottawa, Canada)

Through the use of analogue audio/video synthesis, McKenna’s performances create mind-melting synesthetic progressions of visceral, seemingly abstract sound and vision. His continually evolving setups of self-built and heavily customized gear employ constructive and destructive interference patterns to the task of exploring resonances within specific space and time across hybrid media.

Maria Guggenbichler was born in Munich, Bavaria. She studied both a degree in Performance Research at Gießen Universität, Germany, and graduated in Fine Art’s at Dartington in England. Since 2010, Guggenbichler has been curator for Extrapool in Nijmegen, The Netherlands; from which she has organized various art and music events, including a series of artist book residencies (Work Holidays / Art Prison) through its attached stencil print and bookmaking workshop.

Guggenbichler’s work frequently blurs what might commonly be considered an artistic, “facilitating”, and/or curatorial practice and openly runs against the ‘lonesome’ or ‘private’ ideals of art, believing in collaboration and dialogue, aimed at opening the artist’s studio.

Her work has been described as a practice “interested in creating spaces and situations that allow for the human, (charming) helplessness and (wilful) ridiculousness to take place.”

An on-going collaboration of Guggenbichler’s is with the German artist Rosalie Schweiker. Together they ran the gallery of Educated Elite & Wealth out of their own private flat in Gießen, Germany, which showcased retrospectives of Felix Gonzales-Torres and Helge Schneider, produced the street art poster campaign These Women Have Something To Offer (2008-2011), and, most recently they ran Atelier Unpopulär/Unpopular Workshop, out of an artist in residency at Lothringer13_laden, Munich, 2011.

Since 2009, Maria Guggenbichler has also been a regular host for The Take Away Tape, a radio show for experimental electronics on the English community radio station Soundart Radio 102.5 fm.

Session # 3: please note, no advance preparation or previous attendance necessary.

Sunday, November 6 – 12h00 + 16h00

• 12h00 – reading group session, hosted with an introductory talk by Jeremiah Day
• 15h00 – group lunch
• 16h00 – Guest Presentations: The Question of Function – three examples of the status and role of culture in public life, featuring Tanja Baudoin, Florian Göttke, and Stefan Wharton; open discussion and drinks to follow.

Goleb is pleased to announce a special Sunday session of the on-going series Hannah Arendt’s The Crisis in Culture: Its Social and Its Political Significance. The session is open to the public with no prior attendance or preparation necessary. As in the first two sessions, the text will be read aloud, with frequent pauses for discussion.

At 16:00, Goleb invites three guest speakers to present their practice and research, serving as examples to continue the conversation from the reading session. Warm drinks and snacks will be available and lunch will be served during the break.

The Question of Function

Arendt insists quite clearly that neither culture nor society are generic or neutral terms, but are rather conditioned by specific historic moments (it is interesting to note that for Arendt, the social can even be the opposite of the political). Arendt also asserts that culture has no function, strictly speaking, but at the same time argues that art does have a role to play in political life.

In this afternoon session we will take up this paradoxical framework and explore it through several concrete projects dealing with the public reception and response to culture, looking at examples from text, music and architecture. Through a consideration of parallel disciplines we will lay the groundwork for an open discussion on how Arendt’s ideas might relate to contemporary visual art.

Tanja Baudoin (NL) organizer of the discursive programme of If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution, will discuss the on-going reading group hosted by If I Can’t Dance, and how it has over the years continued to facilitate discussion on art practice and theory – moving somewhere between a think tank and a place for open debate and exchange.

Florian Göttke (DE) will present part of his on-going project Eagles and Lions. The project considers the way in which monuments and architecture were positioned as arguments in the fight for supremacy between communist and capitalist ideologies in East and West Berlin. Göttke is a visual artist based in Amsterdam; his book Toppled, a work tracing the ups and downs of Saddam Hussein’s statues, was nominated for the Dutch Doc Award 2011.

Stefan Wharton (UK) will talk about the social significance of improvised music, with particular concern for the politics of sonority, and the implications of marginalisation, in particular the Leeds Improvised Music Association (LIMA) – a regional improvised music collective – with regard to how such music can act to genuinely shape the society that surrounds it. Wharton is both a practicing musician as well as pursuing research in musicology at the University of Amsterdam.

Doors: 20h30

Goleb is pleased to announce the performance (MTVS) Broadcasting World Citizenship by Lado Darakhvelidze. The performance (which will be the first in a series of ‘connections’ in the build up to his residency and performance at Goleb in February 2012) will take place within a TV-set-up, complete with dancers and a house band.

Connecting via Skype, Darakhvelidze will explore the notion of Citizenship by establishing a cross-cultural dialogue with Cornell University and Telluride House; a residential community committed to supporting democratic ideals of governance.

The dual performance will include a variety of presentations from New York and Amsterdam. Included in the line up is a performance by Nadia Tsulukidze (GR/NL) and Ntando Cele (SA/NL) inspired from the South African Toyi Toyi: a dance that was frequently used during political protests in South Africa. Together they will investigate the principles and elements of the dance that are used to transform a crowd into a community.

About:

Using painting, sculpture, and installations, Georgian artist Lado Darakhvelidze traces power relations rooted in different hierarchical structures, such as within media, political or economic systems. A key idea in the work of Darakhvelidze is the notion of the Citizen-Journalist, who represents the views of the wider public. It can be seen as a reinstatement of citizenship and a form of direct democracy, serving as a barometer about social and political interests, tendencies, and prejudices.

His on-going project Museum TV Station (MTVS) refers to activities in which the artwork or curatorial event evoke actual and engaged political positions, transforming the museum, gallery, or venue into what Darakhvelidze would call an (Open-Source) Information Station.

Darakhvelidze’s work has been shown on an international level, receiving considerable acclaim for his installation Ideal Media, which appeared at the Feriköy Greek School as part of the 11th Istanbul Biennial.

Cornell University is an Ivy League university located in Ithaca, New York, United States. Founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, the university was intended to teach and make contributions in all fields of knowledge—from the classics to the sciences and from the theoretical to the applied. These ideals, unconventional for the time, are captured in Cornell’s motto, an 1865 Ezra Cornell quotation: “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”Since its founding, Cornell has also been a co-educational, non-sectarian institution where admission is offered irrespective of religion or race.

The Telluride Association. Lucien Lucius Nunn founded the Association in 1911 after building the first Telluride House at Cornell University in 1910. The association is a non-profit organization in the United States that provides young people with free educational programs emphasizing intellectual curiosity, democratic self-governance, and social responsibility. Students are invited to apply based on academic criteria, however, anyone can apply without nomination. The Association’s principal programs are summer seminars for high school students, called TASSes and TASPs, and scholarship houses, called Telluride Houses, for college students. These residential programs are offered at no cost to the students, who are encouraged to use the benefit of their education for service to society.

In the last few months a host of new (self-organized) art initiatives have sprung up all over the Amsterdam landscape, complimenting an array of pre-existing spaces that in the years past have effectively contributed to the cultural and experimental art scene of Amsterdam.

As a means for trying to incite discussion between these spaces, the Danish artist Alexander Krone held an open invitation dinner in September at The Outpost (a production and gallery space organized and curated by Alexander Krone in Amsterdam-West).

Following the success of the first dinner grew The Amsterdam Dinner Movement: a monthly gathering for Amsterdam’s art initiatives, to be hosted in a combined effort, by a variety of different spaces across the city.

The idea is to create an informal exchange, where practical knowledge can be shared, whilst creating awareness for the ideas and activities of the other spaces.

Goleb is pleased to announce, for the second instalment of this project, Goleb will be hosting the event on Sunday 23rd October 2011.

The dinner will begin at 18h00 and will be followed with a free public concert at 21h00 by the band Tree House + Guests (To be announced).

http://t-r-e-e-h-o-u-s-e.bandcamp.com/track/utopiii

For this dinner, artists Rumiko Hagiwara (JP) & Taf Hassam (UK) will be cooking up a selection of Japanese and Indian food.

The dinner is free and open to any self-organized art initiative or project operating in the Amsterdam area.

Project Goleb Presents:

Hannah Arendt’s

The Crisis in Culture: Its Social and Its Political Significance

Saturday October 15th – 12:00 PM

Session # 2: please note, no advance preparation or previous attendance necessary.

Hosted with an introductory talk “Hannah Arendt in Dark Times” by Jeremiah Day.

Following the September launch and first reading session, Goleb is pleased to host a second reading group of the ongoing series Hannah Arendt’s The Crisis in Culture: Its Social and Its Political Significance. The session is open to the public with no prior attendance or preparation necessary. As in the first session, the text will be read aloud, pausing (frequently) for discussion, clarification, and argumentation. Coffee and pastries will be served and copies of the text will be available in both Dutch and in English.

With Goleb’s own practice and the surrounding neighborhood as a backdrop, we will address such questions as – is culture only a realm of “polite talk”? How does the avant-garde ambition to break with the past relate to consumerism’s need for “freshness and novelty”? And how can “taste” be considered a political faculty?

The work of the German-American political theorist Hannah Arendt is widely acknowledged in contemporary social and political debates, yet her unique understanding of the inter-relationship between cultural practice and the polis has been largely overlooked. “The Crisis in Culture: Its Social and Its Political Significance” published in 1961, was Arendt’s contribution to the debates of her time concerning avant-garde and kitsch, high and low culture. This fiftieth anniversary serves as an occasion to take up this text, explicate and elaborate upon it, bringing Arendt’s ideas into dialogue with the questions faced in contemporary thinking on art and politics.

The series will continue on November 5th with a daylong session: morning reading session, group lunch, and afternoon symposium with guest presentations on the practice of art and public life.

As the precursor of Goleb’s coming film series At night we are consumed by fire and the introduction to Day’s Arendt project, The Crisis in Culture: Its Social and Its Political Significance, this evening will present two documentaries about Dischord Records, the home of musical groups such as Fugazi and Minor Threat. Following Arendt’s focus on the distinction between culture and entertainment, the program will consider the way Dischord Records’ founder Ian Mackaye has tried to organize a practice in which music is not reduced to consumption, and as an example of the engagement of art with public life. Also discussed will be the 2005 Cork Caucus, an international forum of artists and thinkers, of which (PR) Evens was one of its legacies.

Jeremiah Day (US) graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1997. From 2000-2002 he was artist-in-residence at Beyond Baroque Literary Art Center, Los Angeles until moving to Holland in 2003 to attend the Rijksakademie. Recent exhibitions include Storytellers, Frac Champagne-Ardenne, Jeremiah Day / Simone Forti / Fred Dewey, Ludlow 38, New York and various solo shows in Amsterdam with Ellen de Bruijne PROJECTS.

In Jeremiah Day’s work questions of site and historical memory are explored through fractured narratives, employing photography, speech, and improvisational movement. A hybrid form of realism, Day appropriates historical incidents to serve as allegories and examples that might shed insight upon broader philosophical and political questions.

In 2011, as part of his Doctoral project at VU/Mahku, Day has organized a series of projects around the 50th anniversary of Hannah Arendt’s essay “The Crisis in Culture: Its Social and Its Political Significance.” Goleb is collaborating in this project through hosting a series of reading and discussion events.

In addition, on September 20th Day will launch Goleb’s film series At night we are consumed by fire. Day will be presenting two documentaries Instrument (2003) and (PR) Evens (2006), both dealing with the band Fugazi and the self-organized music scene of Washington DC. The film will be introduced with a lecture by Day looking at the organization of culture through both the lens of Arendt’s work and the contemporary situation in the Netherlands.
