DJ DOG DICK

http://vimeo.com/13663851

I don’t think I really need to do much of an introductory speech, when writing about an artist who goes by DJ DOG DICK; I mean, most of that attention-grabbing expostulation takes care of itself; if I tried, all I’d end up with, would be so much empty patter. Nah, DJ Dog Dick–the reigning champ of the slimily-saw-waved backing tracks and beats that’ll outbass most anything.

Considering he hails from Baltimore, lugs around a large collection of electronics, and has a 60-Watt light show, it’s easy to compare DJ Dog Dick to rising star, Dan Deacon. The two even toured alongside each other as part of the Baltimore Round Robin tour. However, DJ Dog Dick (despite his rather humorous moniker) actually seems a bit more serious and introspective with his performance than Deacon. The show I saw at Silent Barn in Brooklyn didn’t have a lot of dancing, but as DJ Dog Dick stared over his collection of knobs, wire, and cassette tapes, the room was filled with a large amount of respect for his musicianship.

He’s been on the constant-touring warpath for years and has played everywhere and with everyone. He was a member of the venerable (and universally beloved) Nautical Almanac, and has logged time with countless other acts the world over, even stopping by the WFMU studios in 2006 as part of Little Howlin’ Wolf’s ensemble when it played a set on Brian Turner’s show. If these songs aren’t the most jammed at your next party or board meeting or other social function, you’ve blown it.

SEWN LEATHER

Sewn Leather is scum anthem, beat heavy, new wave trash – dance party tunes for dead beat punks, dirty weirdos and those who aspire to morbid underground lifestyles. Essentially the wrong kind of party jams for the wrong kind of party. Griffin Pyn (Sewer) is the demonic spirit, the martyred victim and the shaman that heals and exorcises us all through his sonic sacrifice. Sewn Leather’s shows aren’t performances so much as bloodletting rituals. A spontaneous group-trance ceremony transpires from a multitude of sweaty limbs, heads and feet – stomping, swaying, punching, pulsing and hypnotised into one singularly-thinking-entity by infectiously minimal bass beats, seemingly ground to a pulp by the teeth of some odious beast.

MODERN WITCH

Modern Witch an electronic group made up of visual and musical artists from Denver, CO and Amsterdam… they are also involved in some sick zine-art production under the publishing name Drippy Bone Books. Open the triangle-mind for hallucinatory synthtones wrapped in a dark beats and haunting black tarot-head visions perfect for a displaced and bleak landscape of broken technology.
