*Newsletter* Prelude for La Cocina @ Goleb

La Cocina @ Goleb

Dear all,

Here are some updates on our activities, both from the past six years and the near future.

The artist-run space Goleb was conceived as an all-inclusive shelter for residing artists and visiting guests, as well as a platform for sharing ideas and resources in a more intimate and generous manner. The choice to create such a micro-communal situation was an attempt to shift common exclusions and competitions into solidarity and horizontally operating infrastructure. Needless to say, anyone is welcome to propose and organize additional public events.

Since early 2010, Goleb has remained interdependent and relational on many levels – from being part of shared studio environment in De Vlugt / former school in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, to a variety of policies and collaborations that make Goleb‘s situation possible.

Home Affairs’ workshop

This summer, Arzu Ozkal and Nanette Yannuzzi, two members of the art collective Home Affairs, have conducted “an art-making workshop for children of all ages” Once Upon (many) Syria. The workshop combined storytelling and creative interventions to refocus prejudices towards refugees. While hosting Home Affairs, the little bird that was chosen symbol for the workshop, Syrian serin, has also reminded us of our own bird and the story behind the name Goleb. The story goes: after encountering an endemic bird somewhere in Northern Europe a bunch of refugees rename it to Goleb.

Collaboration: La Cocina

Goleb is now welcoming new alliances that will reorganize and reconnect our actual artistic autonomy. In the past, Goleb‘s all-inclusive approach has allowed different artists and cultural producers to closely come together and/or produce collaborations. The new program initiated by Alejandro Ramirez and Lore Gablier, La Cocina, will make another move by reintroducing the idea of kitchen as a political and cultural meeting place. Instead of attempting to resolve the artistic oppositions and different live-work attitudes, La Cocina will propose to maintain them in a productive and “agonistic” manner.

More details on La Cocina programme will follow early next month – do stay tuned!

Nice wishes,
